Drones, also known as quadcopters, can usually fly for around 20 to 25 minutes. That isn’t exactly low but there are plenty of times you definitely need it for longer. Students at the Imperial College of London have decided to ditch batteries and try something new: wireless powered drone.
As you can see from the video above, the drone can keep on flying as long as it is based over the wireless charging area. There are no batteries at all so that also makes the drone a lot lighter. This new technology is actually quite promising as the drone is able to fly 5 inches / 13 cm off the wireless charging base. In comparison, you need your smartphone to be against the wireless charging base. So this is definitely a step forward.
The only downside is that the second the connection is cut, the drone will come falling down. Mostly because there is no battery. If you are tech savvy and want to learn more about this technology, then you can also check out the research paper published for this wireless charging base.
